Who Can Get a Library Card?

Residency Requirements

Individuals owning property or living within the limits of the City of Walla Walla are eligible for a free libray card. Individuals owning property or living within the limits of other jurisdictions subject to an agreement between the City of Walla Walla and said jurisdiction are eligible for a free library card. Falsification of statement is subject to State law RCW 9A .76.175.

Residents of the unincorporated areas of Walla Walla County can use the Walla Walla Public Library because they pay property taxes to the Walla Walla County Rural Library District. The Walla Walla County Rural Library District and Prescott, WA have contracts with the Walla Walla Public Library to provide service to their taxpayers. The Walla Walla Public Library also offers a library card with full borrowing privileges for $135.00 a year, or $70.00 for 6 months to anyone, anywhere!

It's the best card in your wallet. You must bring your library card every time you visit the library. The card identifies you as a member of our library and helps us to provide the best service to our customers.

 

 

 

How to Get a Library Card ?

Adults (18 or older) who meet the residency requirement, may come to the Library during open hours. Bring something with your name and current Walla Walla address. After you fill out a short registration form, your information will be added to the Library database. You will be given your WALNET Library card and can check out immediately. You are required to present your WALNET Library card each time you check out.  

 

 

Children (under 18 years) who meet the residency requirement, may come to the Library during open hours. Bring with you a parent or legal guardian. After you fill out a short registration form and have your parent or legal guardian sign it, your information will be added to the Library database. You will be given your WALNET Library card and can check out immediately. You are required to present your WALNET Library card each time you check out.

 

Lost Cards  

Lost cards may be replaced, at the Library, during regular hours, for $1.00 Please bring identifying information with you.  

 

Borrowing Limits  

Borrow as many books, magazines and cassette tapes as you wish. Return them within 3 weeks.

Borrow 5 music compact disks per day. Return them within 3 weeks.

Borrow 5 videos per day. Return in 7 days. 

Borrow 5 DVDs per day. Return in 7 days. 

Borrow 5 recorded books on CD per day. Return them within 3 weeks.

All library materials may be renewed twice, unless someone is waiting for them. Materials may be renewed online anytime before they are due, by phone or in person when the library is open.  

 

 

Return Materials  

Print materials may be returned to the Library several ways.

Inside the Library during open hours. Items are checked in continually.

In the outside book drop located near the Poplar street entrance. Items returned here after 2:00 PM will be checked in the next day.

In the outside book drop, in the parking lot, located off of Alder street near Palouse. Items returned here after 2:00 PM will be checked in the next day.

Audio Visual Materials or AV (DVDs, CDs, Video Tapes & Cassette Tapes) may be returned in several ways.

AV may be returned inside the building at the circulation desk. Items are checked in continually.

AV may be returned in the AV return located in the wall by the Poplar street entrance. Items returned here after 5:00 PM will be checked in the next day.

AV should not be returned in the outside boxes, with the exception of the through the wall drop.

 

Overdue Materials/Fines and Fees  

Return books and magazines by the due date to avoid overdue fees. They may be returned inside the building or in the outside book drops. Items returned in the outside book drops after 2:00 p.m. will be checked in the following day.

 

Return DVDs, Videos, CDs and Cassette Tapes inside the building at the circulation desk or use the AV return located in the wall by the Poplar Street entrance. All AV materials returned after closing will be checked in the following day. Please do not return CDs, DVDs, Videos, Compact Disks or Cassette Tapes in either of the outside drops.

 

The overdue fee for children's materials is $ .50 per item as soon as it is overdue .

The overdue fee for adult materials is $2.00 per item as soon as it is overdue .

The overdue fee for DVDs and Videos is $1.00 per item, per day, as soon as it is overdue .

Damaged items are reviewed and accessed charges according to the amount of damage and ability to circulate the item.

Library users with material overdue 60 days passed the due date will be charged to replace the material as well as an additional $5.00 fee.

Replacement WALNET Library cards are $1.00 each.

The Library can only accept payment by cash or check.

 

 

 

Internet & Wireless Computer Services

Internet Policy

The Library has computers with the Microsoft Office Suite and access to the Internet. Use is on a first come, first served basis and limited to one session per day. Computers with Microsoft Office Suite may be used in addition to Internet usage each day. You must have a valid WALNET card to use the computers in the Library.The Library also provides the opportunity for those visiting from out of town (50 miles or more) to use a guest pass with the same time limit. Additionally, there is a terminal available for email use only; it is not restricted to WALNET cardholders. Printing is 10 cents per page on all computers.

 

Wireless access is available throughout the Library. You must provide your own computer with a wireless network card. Printing is not available on the wireless network and the ability to access power is limited.

 

Books for Sale

When library materials have outlived their usefulness in the collection, they are made available to the public for only 50 cents for a paperback book and one dollar for a hardback book. These discards are displayed opposite the Circulation Desk. The books change weekly, so stop in often to check the current offerings.

 

 

 

New Books  

New books are constantly being chosen for the Library. When processed, these books are placed on the new book shelves near the copy machine. They check out for the usual 3 week period, and can renew if no one is waiting for them. Each week a small selection of new books are featured in the Union-Bulletin newspaper. These featured books are placed on display across from the new books. Feel free to review these and place holds on the ones you find interesting. If the Library has your email address, we will email you when the book is available for you.

 

 

 

Suggest a Purchase  

To suggest the Library purchase specific material, come to or call the Library 509-527-4550 with the title, author and any other informaton you know about the material. Fill out a purchase request form. We will evaluate the material using the same criteria which is used for other purchases. If the Library purchases your requested material, you will be notified when it is available for checkout. You may also do this on-line here.

 

 

Book Club  

Anyone who has a WALNET library card is welcome to join the Library's book club. It meets the 3rd Wednesday of the month at noon at the Library. Call 524-4433 or check the calendar to verify the time and date and to see what we're reading.

 

The Library also has a program called Book-Club-In-A-Bag. These are tote bags with multiple copies of a paperback book along with discussion questions. It is a convenient way for WALNET Library cardholders to start their own book club by checking out the tote bag and its books.

 

The Library also provides an online program called DearReader which sends subscribers an email containing the first chapter of a new book. Beginning on Monday, a section equivalent to 5 minutes of reading will be sent to your email. By Friday you will have completed the first chapter. Genres include Fiction, NonFiction, Bestsellers, Business and Mysteries. Sign up for the DearReader Program here.

 

 

Meeting Rooms  

The Library has a meeting room for programs which are open to the public and held during regular Library Hours.  Meetings may not charge a fee or involve a private enterprise or sales. The Program Room is not for regular, on-going meetings.  

The Children's Program room may be used for public meetings. Look here for meeting room policy and rules.  

The Children's Program release form must be filled out by the person scheduling the room for use and returned to the Library....

How can I find out about programs at the Library?

The Library has a calendar which lists brief program descriptions as well as dates and times. The Library's Home Page will also direct you to the information that you need or you can call us at (509) 527-4550 and we'll be glad to answer any questions.

 

Does the Library offer classes for new computer users?

The Library offers classes, when there is interest, for new users and will offer classes beyond the basics based on patron requests, too. Call the Library at 527-4550 to find out about class schedules.

Damaged Materials  

I didn't damage the book, but the book that I've checked out needs to be repaired how should I let the Library staff know about it?

When a book has been checked out frequently, it will often need to have attention paid to its binding or cover or other minor repair. If you are reading a book and it needs to be repaired, please bring it to our attention when you return it. If you have to use the bookdrop for its return, put a rubber band around it and that will alert us to take a look at it. 

 

Library material was damaged during the time I checked it out. How much do I need to pay for its repair or replacement?

If Library material has been torn, been exposed to weather, or has been damaged in any other manner including missing covers or barcodes, please bring the material to the Circulation Desk so that the damage can be assessed and fees or replacement costs explained. 

 

The application for your WALNET library card includes a signed agreement that you are responsible for the timely return of materials, in an undamaged condition, which are checked out to you or your dependents.

May I request a book from another library?

There are two methods for obtaining books from other libraries. If the book is owned by another WALNET library (the Walla Walla Community College or its branch at Clarkston or the Walla Walla Rural Library (Burbank, Touchet, Vista Hermosa and Prescott) you may request the book online using your WALNET card. If the material is not owned by a WALNET library and it is a book, you make ask to borrow it through Interlibrary Loan. There is a $3 fee for this service and will be collected when you pick up the book. We do not use Interlibrary Loan for library materials other than books.

 

 

How do I renew my Library books, cds, dvds, or magazines?

You may renew your materials online, by phone at 527-4550 during regular library hours or in person (you do not need to bring the materials with you to renew them).

 

How do I renew my materials online?

You can renew your materials online at the Library's website by following these steps:

•  Click on the tab at the top labeled: Login

•  Type in your 14 digit Library card number found on your WALNET Library card. It starts with 24388 . . .

•  Type in your last name and click on Login

•  On the next page click on the tab labeled: Your Account

•  In the area labeled “ Charged Items ” click in the box in front of each item which you want to renew and then click on Renew Items . Your new due date will appear in the Status column.

 

If items did not renew, it may be for one or more of the following reasons:

•  The item has already been renewed twice.

•  The item is on hold for someone else.

•  The item is already overdue .

•  Your total fines have reached the maximum amount of $10

•  Your Library card has expired. (Library card expiration is explained here .)

 

Why do Library cards expire?

Library cards expire after two years and can be renewed by stopping at the Circulation Desk and filling out a short form and signing it. This gives the opportunity to verify that we have the correct and current address, phone number and email information for you.

 

Does the Library take donated books or magazines?

The Library appreciates the gift of donated material but it is evaluated with the same criteria used when new material is purchased so we do not always add the items to the Library's collection. Please call 527-4550 for more information.

 

Does the Library have newspapers on microfilm?

The Walla Walla Public Library does not have a microfilm collection but there are local collection available in the area for research. Call the Library at 527-4550 for information.

Do I have to bring my Library card with me every time I use the Library?

If you want to check out materials or use the Internet you must have your WALNET Library card with you. If you do not have your card, you may purchase a replacement card for $1.00 cents. .

 

Are there other branches?

The Walla Walla Public Library is a single facility located at 238 E.Alder St in Walla Walla, Washington.

Does the Library Give Tours

Tours for childrens groups can be scheduled by calling 509-524-4435 or 509-524-4431.

My Library Card

Is my card still good? Do I owe fines? What do I have checked out? Where am I on hold for a book? All these can be answered by looking up your account on-line, or by calling he Library during open hours at 509-527-4550.

Tax Forms

The Library carries the 1040 series of tax forms and instruction booklets. It also has a notebook of reproducable forms. Most tax forms can be found on line at IRS.gov.

What are "charged" items?

Charged items are items that are "checked-out".

What does discharge mean?

An item that says "discharged" indicated that it was checked into the Library within the last 24 hours.
