The Walla Walla Public Library has received a $30,000 grant from the Wildhorse Foundation to support the upcoming comprehensive revitalization project. Wildhorse Foundation grant funds will directly support construction improvements within the City’s $16 million renovation project.
The project will create more welcoming, light-filled and flexible spaces, dedicated programming rooms, new restrooms, upgraded infrastructure to support modern technology, unified staff areas and a civic plaza connecting the library to downtown Walla Walla. The renovation will also introduce energy-efficient systems and sustainable design elements targeting LEED Silver certification.
“The support of the Wildhorse Foundation reflects the remarkable generosity of our community,” said Heather VanTassell, Library Director. “Their investment helps move this renovation from vision to reality. Together, we are creating a more welcoming, accessible, and flexible library — one thoughtfully designed to serve generations to come. We look forward to sharing this next chapter with our community.”
Each year, the Wildhorse Foundation makes grants to eligible nonprofit, government and Tribal organizations within the homeland area of the Cayuse, Umatilla and Walla Walla people. Also eligible for funding are Tribal government agencies or Native American charitable organizations with their base of operations within Oregon, as well as national or regional Indian organizations.
The Wildhorse Foundation has awarded a total of more than $20 million in grant funding since its establishment in 2001. Grants are awarded on a quarterly basis with the deadlines being Jan. 1, April 1, July 1, and Oct. 1. For more information, visit the Foundation’s website at thewildhorsefoundation.com.
Built in 1970, the current library serves more than 9,000 active cardholders and welcomes more than 10,000 visitors each month. In April 2026, the Library will move to a temporary location as construction begins, with the final day of service in the current building set for Saturday, April 4, 2026. The updated facility will expand access to technology, enhance arts and cultural programming, increase opportunities for nonprofit and community group meetings and provide a more efficient environment for staff.
About the Wildhorse Foundation: The fund reflects the commitment of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation to take a proactive, positive role in the well-being of the community. Funds, derived from a percentage of revenues from Wildhorse Resort & Casino, are managed and distributed by a board of directors comprised of community leaders and representatives of the CTUIR.
